Isadora Capraro, Rasa Valiene and Will Ryan

Isadora Capraro immigrated to Argentina from Italy in the mid- 90’s. After graduating from Buenos Aires’ National School of Fine Arts she settled in NYC. Rasa Valiene moved to the East End of Long Island from Lithuania 20 years ago. Her work leans toward the surrealistic with symbolism inspired by her international experience. Rasa is fascinated by the infinite intricacy and complexity of the universe as well as nature and human consciousness.

Will Ryan is a force in the Hamptons’ art community. His Ryan is a force in the Hamptons’ art community. His focus merges many art forms including painting, photography, music and poetry. In the artist’s words,”On a quest for spirit, playfulness and primal beauty, my goal is to approach each new work with joy and curiosity; trusting in knowing when to lead, and when to follow.” The Dalpiaz’s blend Bobbie’s ceramics with Bob’s wood sculpting. SMALL WORKING IN SYNCHRONY 5X7 JPG (FRONT&BACK)2.jpg

On June 12th, the William Ris Gallery kicks off its summer season with a group exhibit WORKING IN SYNCHRONY. The show will highlight work by painters Anahi DeCanio and Kurt Giehl with sculptor Katherine Stanek.

Anahi DeCanio is a multidisciplinary artist using mixed media, photography, collage as a form of expression. Her complex abstract landscapes encompass layer upon layer, each awaiting exploration. As viewers dive deeper into the works, subtle details that might have been missed upon initial glance are unveiled. Graffiti like elements and text, in combination with Zen and gilding with occasional collage elements produce a vibrant energy creating unexpected arresting works.

Kurt Giehl was drawn to the Hamptons for the amazing light and natural beauty. His seascape paintings highlight the subtleness horizon – where air meets land meets water. Each painting is orchestrated to not only capture the physical beauty of Long Island’s East End but to also capture a state of mind, atmosphere and aura of the images captured on these fishing trips.

Katherine Stanek has worked in bronze, stone and marble. She became intrigued by the versatility of concrete and began to explore the medium further and developed her own mixtures and formulas enabling her to manipulate the material in a way that works with her personal aesthetic. This marriage of content and craft has gained the attention of collectors and artists alike as she has been invited to exhibit her unique concrete sculptures in museums, galleries and sculpture gardens throughout the United States.

ABOUT FULL MOON ARTS

The Full Moon Arts Collective came into existence in East Moriches in 2005, spearheaded and supported by artist Ronnie Weiner, with the express intent of creating a space and environment to allow artists of varying disciplines to create visionary work. Whether art, music, dance, performing arts or poetry, the vision then and now is to allow the spirit of free and unencumbered ideas to flourish, and then to present the result of that effort to the community at large. In 2018 the collective was reinvigorated by Weiner with a new group of East End artists to pursue their individual visions in the same collaborative environment.

The Force of Nature

THE FORCE OF NATURE

Each artist in the WRG group show THE FORCE OF NATURE has a unique interpretation and visual in mind when considering the natural world.

From monotypes and collage by printmaker Erika Radich; abstract landscapes by Roohi Saleem; Deborah Lennek’s bivalve imagery; the sensual and evocative trees by Seung Lee; photomontages and imagined landscapes by Susan M. Saunders; Tom Brydelsky’s mixed media compositions; and the graceful organic wood sculpture by John Cino.

At the William Ris Gallery, we believe in the power of art as a source of joy and we are thrilled to be reopening the gallery to public, while complying with all NY State protocols.

While we ask that all patrons wear a mask during these next re-opening phases, the "touchless" experience of viewing art in a gallery environment remains pure in form for everyone to safely enjoy.

A SENSE of PLACE

image.jpg

Saturday, February 15th will officially mark William Ris Gallery’s 4th anniversary on the North Fork of Long Island. The weekend celebration will include an opening for A SENSE of PLACE with work by painters Amanda Kavanagh and Maxine Jurow and photographer Scott Farrell.

The reception will be 4-7pm with an artists’ talk scheduled for February 29th, 1-3pm.

Kavanagh, Jurow & Farrell venture into land and seascapes propelled by their respective styles and views of the world. Crossing the boundaries A Sense of Place finds common ground in this first show of 2020.

Maxine Jurow: “I have been deeply inspired by trips to Australia, the Caribbean, Morocco, the Southwest and Long Island where I live. Through memories of these places I construct essential, abstracted landscapes - part observation, part imagination. My art works are, in a sense, a meditation on these places; the sources I continually return to.”

Amanda Kavanagh: As a landscape oil painter, I am interested in exploring themes of transition and contrast in nature. For me, painting is a form of meditation and, if I am lucky, an opportunity to witness that fleeting moment between ordinary and extraordinary. This latest work developed following an artist residency in Watch Hill, Fire Island and focuses on the connection between nature, place and memory.

Scott Farrell: "Elliott Erwitt described photography as an art of observation - having little to do with what you see and everything to do with how you see it. Whether shooting representational landscapes or what I refer to as 'alternative landscapes', my principle desire is to reveal that which is most often overlooked."

The show will run through March 15th.

Please join us on Saturday, November 16th for the opening reception of ANGLES. Works by photographers E. Cindy Stein and Mike McLaughlin will be highlighted with a focus on NYC’s Architecture and Interiors. Stein and McLaughlin’s love for Manhattan stirs this collection as each put their own unique spin on interiors and exteriors of iconic landmarks. Both artists capture the energy and essence of the city. E. Cindy says, “Light and shadows draw me in and reveal all sorts of beautiful forms. Geometrics seem to set me free. Photography allows me to show others what I see.”

In Mike McLaughlin’s words: “My quantitative background, in combination with a passion for modern architecture, has informed my approach to both composition and post-processing technique, characterized by a spare and clean style.”

SPACE & COLOR: Karl H. Szekielda

  • Google Calendar ICS
WRG SPACE-COLOR 7x5 1.jpg

The William Ris Gallery is honored to welcome painter Karl H. Szekielda in his solo exhibition SPACE & COLOR opening on May 25, 2019.

Born in Germany and a long time resident of the Hamptons, one can say Szekielda has led a multi-faceted life, not only geographically but also career-wise. Studying art in Berlin then later receiving a Doctorate in Science from the University of Aix-Marseille in France laid the foundation for what would become a parallel passion for both art and science as Szekielda was offered a Fellowship under NASA interpreting satellite images, then later at the United Nations heading the Remote Sensing Unit as a Senior Fellow, all while interpreting space images and ocean color onto his artwork. Szekielda believes that art is a process that is based both on imagination as well as a thorough understanding of space, color and material flow that leads to an esthetic interpretation.

The influence of science on Szekielda’s artwork led to an invitation by the German Haus in Manhattan to present a solo exhibition as part of the celebration of the “Einstein Year” in 2005. As Renée Phillips, director of Manhattan Arts International, noted, “Science and art are connecting, interspersed and overlapping. His art evokes a sensual and energetic condition of atmospheric light with effortless movement and soft edges.”

During the nearly month long exhibition of SPACE & COLOR , the Gallery will also be hosting a performance of contemporary composer Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Tierkreis (the English title is “Music of the Zodiac”) on June 1 at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Fourth Annual Rites of Spring Festival, to be performed by long time collaborators Cliff Baldwin and Dwight Frizzell. Composed in 1974 for music boxes, each short melody was created for a specific constellation of stars in the Zodiac. What better backdrop for this unique musical experience than with Szekielda’s space inspired paintings.

SPACE & COLOR exhibition will run until Father’s Day, June 16.
